Autologous Serum Eye Drops (plasma eye drops) are used for severe and chronic dry eye conditions, disruption of normal tear production, or other conditions such as recurrent corneal erosion (RCE), keratopathy, amniotic membrane transplantation, peripheral corneal ulcers and other ocular surface diseases affecting the corneal epithelium. Autologous means that the donor and the recipient are the same person. Autologous serum eye drops are made from your own blood and no chemicals (like preservatives or antibiotics) are added. Because of this, it is not possible for you to have an allergic response to these drops.

This is accomplished by drawing tubes of your own blood. After the blood sample is obtained, it will be centrifuged. Red blood cells and clotting factors are removed, leaving behind blood serum. This serum is diluted with a sterile, preservative-free saline solution to produce a tear substitute that is unique to the patient, and contains many important growth factors and nutrients normally found in healthy tears.

Since blood and tears have an almost identical salinity and pH, there is no issue of burning or stinging upon instillation. Because they are non-preserved, the drops are stored in the freezer until you need them.
